Binger mouse tower |
The Mäuseturminsel is an uninhabited river island in the upper Middle Rhine , located about 70 meters from the left (southern) bank of the Rhine in the city of Bingen am Rhein (district of Bingerbrück ), between river kilometers 530.1 and 530.4. The island lies between the Nahe estuary (a good 600 meters above the island) and the Binger Loch (400 meters below). Ehrenfels Castle stands above the far right bank of the Rhine .
The narrow, almost 250-meter-long Rhine Island is known for the Binger Mouse Tower , a former customs and defense tower , which stands on its eastern tip upstream . The island, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley , owes its name to this legendary tower . The island is almost completely forested. There is a shipping pier on the south bank.
The island is not open to the public. The city of Bingen rarely offers mouse tower trips by ship. When the Rhine is extremely low, as in 2011 and 2018, the island can be reached via a stone wall from the park at the Mäuseturm in Bingen. The supply lines for the island run under this wall. It was renewed and expanded in 2018.
