The Lorcher Werth is an inland island in the Rhine . It consists of two islands , the Großer and Kleiner Lorcher Werth , which are connected by a dam . In earlier times they were also called "Island of the Dead".

Geographical location

The islands are located in the Middle Rhine between Lorch and Niederheimbach , around 10 kilometers from Binger Loch down the Rhine. It extends from the Bächergrund to the ferry line from Lorch to Niederheimbach, which curves around the lower end of the island, from Rhine kilometers 538 to 540. The total length of the uninhabited islands is almost two kilometers with a width of up to 150 meters. Both are shallow and are at least partially flooded during high water.

history

In the vicinity of the Niederwald monument , a monumental " Reichsehrenmal " was to be built in 1926 for those who died in the First World War . The architect Karl Wach planned a stadium for 100,000 people, connected by a "Holy Street" with a stone sarcophagus . During the Great Depression the colossal Toteninsel project was dropped.

In the past decades there was a vineyard , a drinking water pumping station and, at times, a soccer field inside the Großer Lorcher Werth .

nature

The island is a nature reserve and FFH area and may not be entered.

The Lorcher Werth was reforested with hybrid poplars and robinia . The development goal is to gradually remove these tree species and to promote a near-natural alluvial forest and natural bank areas.
