As música erudita brasileira , "learned music", the Brazilian art music is called. It stands as a counterpart to the Música Popular Brasileira and the pop music of Brazil . Música erudita, similar to the popular music of the country, is shaped by diverse and multifaceted cultural influences from peoples of all continents, although the historical development of Brazilian culture goes back to indigenous, European and African origins.

A number of important composers, among whom Antônio Carlos Gomes and Heitor Villa-Lobos are the best known outside of Brazil, have given the Música erudita important impulses and helped it develop independently.
