Roberto Szidon

Roberto Szidon (born September 21, 1941 in Porto Alegre ; † December 21, 2011 in Düsseldorf ) was a Brazilian pianist .

Life

Roberto Szidon received his first piano lessons from Ilse Woebcke Warncke, a student of Conrad Ansorge , who in turn was a student of Franz Liszt in Weimar . Roberto Szidon made his debut in his Brazilian hometown at the age of nine. He graduated from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre . He studied composition with Natho Henn, Enio de Freitas e Castro, Karl Faust and Joanîdia Sodré. Later his pianistic studies led him to Arnaldo Estrella, Homero de Magalhães and Lili Kraus in his home country, to Ilona Kabos and Claudio Arrau in the United States of America , to Arthur Rubinstein in Spain and to Felicja Blumental in Italy . In 1963 he began his career as a concert pianist. In 1967 he moved to Germany. There he initially recorded numerous records for Deutsche Grammophon , pursued a lively concert career and later devoted himself increasingly to teaching tasks at the music academies in Hanover and Düsseldorf, where he succeeded Professor David Levine at the Robert Schumann University . Tobias Koch is one of his well-known students . In addition to numerous awards, he received the de Simses Lopes Netto Medal of the State of Rio Grande do Sul in 1974 for exceptional performance in the field of art, and in 1982 he was awarded the Officer's Degree of the Order of Rio Branco by the President of the Federal Republic of Brazil. From August 1970 until his death he lived and worked with his partner, the pianist and composer Richard Metzler (November 12, 1948 Chicago - February 11, 2013 Düsseldorf).

In addition to South American music such as Heitor Villa-Lobos , Ernesto Nazareth , Francisco Mignone , Mozart Camargo Guarnieri and Chiquinha Gonzaga , Roberto Szidon often performed with unusual repertoire . He also recorded the Concord Sonata by Charles Ives as well as the complete work cycles of the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Franz Liszt and the piano sonatas by Alexander Skriabin on record. For many years he worked closely with violinist Jenny Abel in chamber music .
