The Münster-Therme is an indoor swimming pool in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The building was erected in the second row of a block courtyard on Münsterstrasse in the Pempelfort district and can be reached via a small passage between two houses.

It was originally opened on April 9, 1902 and was then in the tradition of the public baths . The Art Nouveau building was badly damaged by bombs in World War II, but reopened in 1945. In the decades that followed, the swimming pool was repeatedly rebuilt, but the character of the early days was largely retained. After extensive renovation in 2003, the pool was reopened under the new name Münster-Therme .

On December 23, 1997, the indoor swimming pool was entered on the city's list of monuments in the category of buildings for art, culture, science and sport.

The bath occupies a special position in the landscape of the Düsseldorf swimming pools due to its atmosphere and its offers in the area of wellness and relaxation .

history

In 1900 construction began according to the plans of the architect Richard Genschmer . The opening finally took place on April 9, 1902. The result was a bathing establishment which, in addition to a large swimming pool with 22 ° C warm water, also had therapeutic baths , steam baths , tubs and showers . In addition to leisure time , it primarily served hygienic purposes . At that time, the apartments in the ever faster growing cities did not have any bathtubs or showers. So body care , which went beyond simply washing at home, was pursued in public institutions.

During the Second World War , the swimming pool was badly damaged in a bombing raid in October 1944. However, it could be reopened in 1945.

The renovation work carried out over time contributed to the fact that the original face of the swimming pool was changed. The historical design was removed in many places.

In the course of the 1990s there were discussions about closing and converting the indoor pool. However, a restructuring in the administration of the Düsseldorf swimming pools and their transfer into an independent GmbH led to a rethink. Instead of closing it, it has now been decided to reconstruct the original swimming pool with modern technical equipment. In April 2003 a completely renovated bathroom was reopened.
