The Mürtschenstock is a 2441  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the canton of Glarus in Switzerland , which is particularly striking from the Lake Zurich area.

Location and surroundings

North side

The Mürtschenstock rises south of the Walensee in the Obstalden district of the Glarus Nord municipality. The mountain range, which is elongated in north-south direction, is characterized by steep rock faces on all sides. The most important peaks are called Ruchen , Fulen and Stock from south to north and are 2441  m , 2410  m and 2390  m high.

geology

The massif consists of limestone , the southern part around the Ruchen being made entirely of Quintner limestone , while the central and northern part in the upper area consists of Öhrli limestone , and marl can also be found here.

The rock here is extremely brittle, which is also reflected in the name of the mountain: Mürtschen is derived from “rotten”, Ruchen is traced back to “Rüchi” ( rubble dump ) and “rotten” is assumed to be the origin of Fulen .

ways

The middle summit of Fulen is easiest to reach. The normal route leads over the rocky eastern flank with difficulty T5 to the summit. On the Ruchen, too, the slightest ascent leads over the eastern flank, but due to the fragility of the rock in this area, the south ridge (T6) is now the normal route. The summit of the Stock can only be reached by climbing from difficulty level ZS . All three summit points are provided with a summit book . The overrun of the stick from south to north is a popular climb in difficulty IV (UIAA) . Circumnavigating the massif (T3) is popular with hikers.

Mürtschenloch

In the north ridge of the Mürtschenstock is a rock window called the Mürtschenloch or Stocklock . The rays of the sun shining through the hole shine on the church of Mühlehorn at the beginning of November and February and the village of Obstalden GL at the end of November and January . According to legend, the hole is said to have been created by a kite that hit the mountain.

meteorite

In 2017, a 355 gram stone meteorite of the type L6 was found on the Mürtschenstock . Since it has hardly been weathered, the fall could only have taken place a few decades or centuries ago.
