Type MEKO A-200 SAN of the South African Navy ( Valors class )

MEKO is a brand of the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems for a number of warships .

MEKO is Me hrzweck- Ko mbination and interprets the modularization capabilities to. Every potential customer can choose a mixture of weapon systems, electronics and size that is tailored to his needs. Since similar concepts are used in the construction, the ships are correspondingly inexpensive.

The MEKO range includes patrol ships , corvettes , frigates and small destroyers .

history

The MEKO concept was developed by the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg in the 1970s . The first customers for ships of the MEKO 360 series were Nigeria (with one ship, the Aradu (F89) ) and Argentina with the four-ship Almirante Brown class at the end of the 1970s .

In the 1980s, numerous ships of the MEKO 200 class for Turkey were added, Portugal ( Vasco da Gama class ), Greece, South Africa ( Valor class ) and Australia with New Zealand ( ANZAC class ) also acquired frigates of this size.

German Navy ships , such as the K130 and F124 classes , are based on the MEKO design. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems works very closely with other European shipbuilders such as Royal Schelde in the Netherlands and Izar in Spain in order to save costs by using the same equipment. The electronics for the German ships are also mainly bought in Germany and the Netherlands.

A future version is the MEKO D class . The MEKO D will have a displacement of 3500 t, a length of 116 m and a width of 19.6 m. The armament consists of 2 × 16 cells VLS and a gun in caliber 127 mm as well as eight anti-ship missiles.

Another smaller variant is the MEKO CSL (Combat Ship for the Littorals) with a displacement of 2750 t and a length of 108.8 m and width 21 m and a speed of up to 45 kn and with stealth properties . The hull is made of steel and the superstructure is made of GRP . the range is 3500 nm at 16 kn. The CODAG (COmbined Diesel And Gas) is used as the drive .

The Israeli Navy wanted to build a corvette of this type with Israeli electronics under license. After most of the shipyard's shares had been bought up by a group of investors from the United Arab Emirates, these plans were abandoned for security reasons. In May 2015, the Israeli Navy decided to build four MEKO-A100 corvettes. The Sa'ar-6 class ships are to be built in Germany and put into service from 2019. Construction began in 2018.

In January 2016 it was announced that Algeria will purchase two frigates of the type MEKO 1-200 ALG. The first of the two frigates is already being tested at sea and should be delivered in 2016, the second in the following year. Both correspond to the type MEKO A-200 SAN frigates built by TKMS (South Africa).

Egypt should also receive MEKO corvettes, which would be financed by Saudi Arabia. The contract was frozen when Germany stopped future arms sales to Saudi Arabia in late October 2018.
