The Günther is a passenger ship on the Dortmund-Ems Canal , which is named after the television presenter Günther Jauch . His home port is Münster .

description

The ship was built in 1910 at the van Dam shipyard in Overschie, the Netherlands, as a tugboat and put into service as Broedertrouw . At that time it was 23 meters long and 4.19 wide. The draft was 1.48 meters. The tugboat was with a Kromhout engine with 20 HP power equipped. In 1952 the Kromhout engine was replaced by a 116 hp Deutz engine.

The conversion to a passenger ship took place in 1958. The ship received its current dimensions. The passenger capacity was initially 100 people. Another modification took place in 1975 when the Deutz engine was replaced by a Scania Vabis engine with 131 hp.

history

On December 7, 2015, the psychology student Leon Windscheid won as the eleventh candidate in Wer wird Millionär? one million euros after participating in the show for three episodes. In the second episode, Windscheid promised to buy a party ship that he would name after Günther Jauch and operate in Münster if the profit was sufficiently high . Then Jauch, who was born in Münster, promised to take over the christening of the ship as godfather .

At the beginning of March 2016, Windscheid announced via RTL that they had bought a suitable passenger ship in the Netherlands on the IJsselmeer together with his business partner Oliver Trepper. On September 10, 2016, Jauch kept his promise and baptized the Günther in Münster. For the ship's christening with a bottle of champagne from the Othegraven winery , which was passed on to Jauch in the seventh generation in 2010, the television presenter needed four attempts before the bottle burst on the ship. All proceeds from the subsequent christening with Günther Jauch were donated to a refugee project in Münster.

concept

Contrary to what is shown in the media, the ship is not operated as a “technoboot”. Cultural and culinary events take place on board, and Windscheid also offers the ship for charter trips.

On October 4, 2016, the Günther concept was awarded the German Gastro Start-up Prize by a jury headed by TV chef Christian Rach .

reception

There was widespread media coverage of Windscheid's million dollar profit and the plan to name a passenger ship after Günther Jauch, as well as of the baptism itself. Windscheid appeared together with Günther Jauch on Stern TV . There he played through the process of baptizing Günther in the studio with Jauch . Other TV formats also reported regularly on the progress of the project. For example, on June 5, 2016, Windscheid was a guest on Thomas Gottschalk's show Mensch Gottschalk - That Moves Germany . The picture and various other media reported, among other things, on a break-in in Windscheid's private car and an injury that Windscheid sustained during the renovation work on Günther's foot.
