Małgorzata Szpakowska (born May 18, 1940 in Warsaw ) is a Polish literary historian , literary critic and theater critic .

Life

Szpakowa graduated from high school in Warsaw in 1957. She then studied chemistry for three semesters at the Warsaw University of Technology , but switched to Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw in 1959 and graduated in 1964. She also studied philosophy from 1961 to 1966 . After completing her studies, she was a doctoral student at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw from 1966 to 1969. In the course of the so-called Tatra Trials, she was arrested in March 1969 and sentenced to three years in prison in February. Thanks to the amnesty of July 22, 1969, she was released from prison in July 1970. She then worked in the Biblioteka Narodowa until 1972 and was then employed in the editorial department of the journal Dialog , whose essay section she headed until 2002. At the Instytut Badań Literackich of the Polish Academy of Sciences she received her doctorate in 1975 with the thesis Teoria kultury w pismach filozoficznych i lterackich Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza . The following year she signed the Memoriał 101 against the constitutional amendment and the Apel 172 przedstawicieli świata kultury do Sejmu PRL . From 1981 to 1985 she was literary director of the Stefan Jaracz Theater in Łódź . She then lectured at the State Theater School in Warsaw from 1985 to 1991 and in 1991 changed to a research assistant at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw. There she completed her habilitation in 1996 with the thesis Dyskusje ze Stanisławem Lemem and was employed as an associate professor . She was also a co-founder of the Institute for Polish Culture, where she dealt with the history of ideas until 2010 . In addition, she was a member of the jury for the Nike Literature Prize from 2006 to 2008 . She retired in 2010 and then led seminars for doctoral students. In 2017 and 2018 she was a member of the jury for the Central European Angelus Literature Prize .

She lives in Warsaw.
