The Ma ( Vie : Sông Mã) ( Lao : Nam Ma) is a 512 km long river in Vietnam and Laos . It rises in the northwest of Vietnam, then crosses the border to Laos, in order to later cross the border to Vietnam again, where it flows into the Gulf of Tonkin into the South China Sea .

Its largest tributaries are the Chu (Vie: Sông Chu) (Lao: Nậm Sam), the Bưởi and the Cầu Chày , all of which flow into the Ma in the province of Thanh Hóa . Of its 512 km, 410 km are in Vietnam and 102 km in Laos. It has a catchment area of ​​28,400 km² and an average discharge of 52.6 m³ / s. The Ma has the third largest delta of Vietnam.

The river forms the border between the historical regions and former French protectorates Tonkin in the north and Annam in the south.
