The Chu ( Vie : Sông Chu) ( Lao : Nam Sam) is a 325 km long river in Laos and Vietnam .

It rises in the northeast of Laos near Sam Neua in the province of Houaphan . It then flows 165 kilometers to the east and then crosses the border with Vietnam. Then the Chu crosses the provinces of Nghệ An and Thanh Hóa and flows into the Ma after another 160 km in Vietnam . The Chu has a catchment area of ​​7580 km², of which 4570 km² are in Laos and 3010 km² in Vietnam.
