Gerry Austin happens to find a wallet, with the driver's license it contains, he immediately borrows a Mini and with the money he makes one. The woman ran off penniless John, he would like to follow her, but has no money for the bus. On the street he meets Gerry, who takes him with him. They drive to a gas station, more or less by chance they forget to pay, from now on the police are after them, also because it was found out that the driver's license was stolen. On the way they meet the hitchhiker Shirl, who of course they also take with them. From now on they are bouncing all the gas stations and selling more and more parts of the Mini in order to have some money, while they have to keep hanging over the police.
