Machapuchare (also Machhapuchhare , Machhapuchchhre , Nepali माछापुच्छ्रे हिमाल IAST Machhapuchchhre Himal , German , fishtail ' ) is a 6997  m high mountain in the Himalayas in Nepal .

It belongs to the Annapurna massif and is 25 km north of Pokhara . The reason for the name "fishtail" can be seen when looking at the mountain from the west, from where you can see the two peaks.

The Machhapuchchhre is considered to be the seat of the “ Buddha of limitless light”, the Amitabha , and thus a holy mountain .

In 1957 the Englishmen David Cox and Wilfrid Noyce , participants in an expedition led by James OM Roberts , were able to approach the summit over the north ridge up to the last 50 meters. Up until then, the mountain had proven extremely difficult. Here, however, both had to turn around because of the technical difficulties of the last few meters. The mountain, which is sacred to the local population, was banned from climbing in 1964 by the Nepalese king. It was rumored that this was done at the suggestion of the expedition leader James OM Roberts. In the 1980s there is said to have been an illegal first ascent by New Zealander Bill Denz . However, since Bill Denz had a fatal accident on Makalu in 1983 , this is difficult to verify today.
