The Madidi National Park (Spanish Parque Nacional Madidi , Quechua Madidi mamallaqta parki ) is a national park in the northwestern part of the South American landlocked state Bolivia in the La Paz department , about 200 km north of the La Paz government seat . The national park is one of the places with the world's greatest biodiversity.

overview

The national park stretches from the eastern foothills of the snow-capped Andes - Cordillera (68 ° 45 'W) to the western part of the tropical Amazon river basin (67 ° 30') with the rivers Río Madidi , Río Tuichi and Río Heath . With an extension of 135 km in east-west direction and a mean width of 50 km, it covers an area of 18,958 km². Its easternmost point is near the town of Rurrenabaque on the Río Beni .

The national park is located in an altitude zone of 180 to 5,760 meters above sea level. The climate is diverse and ranges from the cold high mountain climate of the Andes to the temperate climate in the flatlands of the north. In the plain, the precipitation values reach 1,800 mm per year and in the mountain areas of the rainforests in the Alto Madidi area up to 5,000 mm per year. The average temperature is between 25 ° C and 33 ° C and between October and January between 10 and 20 ° C.

flora

The great variety of habitats determines the variety of plant species. So far 4838 species of vascular plants have been identified. The entire flora of the region has around 5000 plant species, including Tessaria integrifolia and Salix humboldtiana , they grow on alluvial land environments, especially on the beaches of the rivers. Other species that have been found so far are Schizachyrium condensatum and Trachypogon spicatus .

fauna

There are around 1370 species of vertebrates , including around 156 species of mammals, some of which are juggler monkeys , spectacled bears , mountain cats , puma , salt cats , northern Andean deer and jaguars . There are 867 different registered birds in the national park. There are around 88 species of amphibians in Madidi . 85 percent of Bolivia's amphibian species live in the Madidi National Park and 180 species of reptiles .

El Bala and Chepete dam projects

The El Bala dam project will have a significant impact on the biodiversity of the Madidi : A jungle area the size of Luxembourg is to be dammed. Another Chepete dam is also being planned.

The El Bala project was targeted by the then government back in 1998. Due to resistance from the indigenous population, El Bala was initially frozen. But in 2007 the project was up for discussion again.

The current government under Evo Morales is determined to implement the project: 6.34 billion US dollars have been approved and the first surveys have already started, which led to violent protests from the indigenous population. The government's reasons are purely economic and the people accuse the government of secrecy and misrepresentation of important information. On the other hand, environmental activists and scientists met with the indigenous population for a protest movement, which other Bolivians interpret as coordinated strategic interference by the USA in the affairs of Bolivia.
