The Río Madidi is a left tributary of the Río Beni in the north of the La Paz department in the lowlands of the Andean state of Bolivia . There is very different information about its length, depending on which source rivers are included. In addition, the Río Madidi meanders very strongly and constantly changes its course.

course

The source rivers of the Río Madidi arise at about 900 m altitude in the Voranden , about 30 km southwest of the village of Ixiamas and 280 km north of La Paz . The first 120 km the river winds through the last foothills of the Andes in the area of the Yungas , which are protected as Madidi National Park due to the high biodiversity and the state hardly influenced by humans , until it reaches the lowland basin at the Cerros de Bala ridge and turns north. From about kilometer 145 it flows northeast through tropical rainforest and savannahs and mainly takes in right tributaries such as the Río Claro, the Río Ciro and the Río Undumo, which drain the area north of Ixiamas. There was practically no settlement around the Río Madidi even outside of the national park; there are only small villages along the last kilometers of the river. The river is also not accessed by any roads, but the construction of the missing sections of Ruta 16 is planned, which will cross the river in the west and represent a third road connection to the north of Bolivia. The Río Madidi flows into the Río Beni just before it reaches the Departamento Pando .

The entire length of the Río Madidi runs through the Municipio Ixiamas (one of the largest Municipios in Bolivia). Due to the strongly meandering course, there are many oxbow lakes and lagoons on the Río Madidi .
