Madonna and Child in Meillers

The sculpture Madonna and Child in the Church of St-Julien in Meillers , a French commune in the Allier department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , was created in the 12th century. In 1907 the Romanesque sculpture was classified as a Monument historique .

The 96 cm high wooden sculpture has only a few remains of a colored frame . The baby Jesus sits on the knees of Mary , who is placed on a wooden chair that is from more recent times.

This oldest Madonna and Child in the Bourbonnais was stolen on September 30, 2007 and found again in June 2008.
