The FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) area of Gronau, which has existed since 2000, with adjacent areas (BfN-ID 6317-302) is located in the Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park and belongs to the city of Bensheim .

location

The FFH area is made up of three non-contiguous sub-areas:

  • The sub-area Bensendell / Rosengrund belongs to the Bensheim districts of Wilmshausen and Schönberg .
  • The Gronau sub-area extends over the Bensheim districts of Gronau and Zell .
  • The Hemsberg sub-area is located in the Bensheim district of Zell and is almost identical to the "Hemsberg von Bensheim-Zell" nature reserve, which has been designated since 1983.

The total area of the FFH area is around 1.6 km² (159.62 ha).

Protected area

The protected area “Magerrasen von Gronau with adjoining areas” belongs as a fauna-flora-habitat (FFH) area to the Natura 2000 protected area system networked across Europe . The action plan for the FFH area dated June 25, 2007 describes the conservation objectives.

The protected area shows extensive stocks of poor grassland and in particular secures the habitat types semi-arid grassland and lean flatland hay meadows. The main goal of the protected area is the preservation and promotion of these habitat types, which are of great importance due to their biodiversity. Typical plants are, for example, meadow sage , thyme and limestone . The Nabu Meerbachtal was able to document 17 orchid species in the Bensheim districts of Zell and Gronau, such as B. Bock Riemenzunge , Ophrys Apifera , Pyramidal and Military Orchid . Butterfly species such as blue thyme , mother-of-pearl and saspard rams use the diversity of plant species. In recent years the praying mantis has also been detected, which is spreading further and further north.

The Hemsberg sub-area occupies a special position, which is also designated as a nature reserve due to its special diversity of rare and endangered plant species.
