Maggot Brain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maggot Brain is a song by the American funk band Funkadelic . The song appeared on their album of the same name in 1971.

The original recording of the song, which is more than ten minutes long, is dominated by a long guitar solo by Eddie Hazel . Michael Hampton , Hazel's successor, recorded his own interpretation of the solo in 1978. This second version was then used on all of the band's re-releases.

Emergence

According to legend, during an LSD trip , George Clinton asked Eddie Hazel to play the first half of the song as if his mother had just died. He should then interpret the second part of the play as if he had found out that his mother was still alive after all.

Although the piece was arranged with other instruments, Clinton quickly recognized the power of Hazel's guitar solo and mixed all the other instruments in the background so that the solo was in focus. The entire piece was recorded in one take.

The spoken text at the beginning of the piece reads as follows: “Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time, for y'all have knocked her up. I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe - I was not offended, for I knew I had to rise above it all, or drown in my own shit. "
