French Rugby Union Championship 2005/06
The 2005/06 season was the 107th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 14 teams in the top division Top 14 and 16 teams in the second highest division Pro D2 .
Top 14
The regular season of the Top 14 had 26 game days (one first and one second round). It began on August 19, 2005 and lasted until May 27, 2006. The four best-placed teams qualified for the semifinals. In the final, which took place on June 10, 2006 at the Stade de France , the semi-final winners played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy . Defending champion Biarritz Olympique won against Stade Toulousain and won the championship title for the fifth time. The teams in the last two places, Section Paloise and the RC Toulon , had to relegate to the Pro D2.
In terms of spectator numbers, this season broke all previous records: 79,502 spectators followed the game between Stade Français and Stade Toulousain in the Stade de France on October 15, 2005, around 20,000 more than the most-attended Ligue 1 game in football. This record was broken on March 4, 2006: 79,604 spectators attended the match between Stade Français and Biarritz Olympique.

The regular season lasted 30 game days (one first and one second round). The best-ranked team, the US Montauban , rose directly to the first division. For the second promotion place, the teams in places 2 to 5 contested a playoff consisting of semi-finals and finals. Finally the SC Albi prevailed. Three teams had to relegate to the Amateur League Fédérale 1 : the Pays d'Aix RC , Stade Aurillacois and the Tyrosse RCS .
