Life

Fisherman, fisheries official and minister in the fourth Gerhardsen government

Andersen, son of the worker, seaman and fisherman Jens Ole Andersen and his wife Inga Andersen, began working as a fisherman like his father in 1932 after attending school and was active in this profession until 1955. During this time he attended a course at the commercial school between 1933 and 1934 and began his political career in local politics in the early 1950s when he became a member of the local council of for the Arbeiderpartiet in 1951 and was a member of it until 1955.

After giving up his own professional activity as a fisherman in 1955, he became chairman of the Norwegian Fishermen's Association (Norges Fiskarlag) , of which he had been a member since 1951. He held the position of chairman of the fishermen's association until 1963. At the same time he was vice-chairman of the guarantee fund for Lofoten fishermen between 1960 and 1965 and also chairman of the committee for Lofoten fisheries from 1961 to 1963.

On September 25, 1963 he was appointed by Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen as Minister of Fisheries (Fiskeriminister) in his fourth government, which he belonged to the end of Gerhardsen's term of office on October 12, 1965.

Storting member

In the election of September 13, 1965 , Andersen was elected as a candidate of the Arbeiderpartiet for the first time as a member of the Storting and represented the interests of Fylke Nordland until the election on September 10, 1973 , where he always took the first place on the list.

During his membership in parliament he was from October 15, 1965 to January 24, 1972 Vice-Chairman of the Storting Committee on Shipping and Fisheries. At the same time he acted between October 1, 1969 and January 24, 1972 as vice-chairman of the Storting Mandate Review Committee. At the same time he was also chairman of the board of the Staatliche Fischereibank (Statens Fiskarbank) between 1968 and 1972 .

Minister in the first Bratteli government

After the resignation of the previous Fisheries Minister Knut Hoem on January 24, 1972 in connection with the intended negotiations for Norway's accession to the European Communities , Andersen was again Minister-Minister for Fisheries as Hoem's successor to Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli and held this ministerial office until October 18, 1972.

Hoem's resignation, however, had a significant impact on the referendum in Norway on September 24 and 25, 1972 , in which membership was rejected by 53.5 percent of the electorate, and as a result of this defeat and the apparent misjudgment of the will of the voters to resign on September 7 , 1972 October 1972. In the discussion about accession, one of the questions that played a role was whether accession would give EC partners free access to fishing waters.

After leaving the government, he was Chairman of the Post Office (Postverket) between 1974 and 1982 and was a member of the Post Board of Directors until 1986.
