Magnus Walch (born June 15, 1992 in Feldkirch , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian ski racer . He is currently (as of 2018) a member of the B-team of the Austrian Ski Association and specializes in the technical disciplines of giant slalom and slalom .

biography

Magnus Walch comes from Lech , where he came into contact with racing through the Arlberg Ski Club . During his primary and secondary school years, he regularly measured himself against his peers, but said he was never able to keep up. It was only when he switched to the ski hotel management school in Bad Hofgastein that he made the serious decision to pursue a racing career.

In December 2007 he contested his first FIS races in St. Moritz , but in the first two years he was always at the bottom of the result lists. After a successful overseas training camp in Australia , he was given the opportunity to train with the Vorarlberger Landesverband and after a national youth championship was accepted into the youth team of the ÖSV. On December 22nd, 2011 he made his European Cup debut in the slalom of Madonna di Campiglio . In 2012 and 2013 he took part in the Junior World Championships , his best result being a 32nd place in the giant slalom on Mont Sainte-Anne .

In the summer of 2013 he was deleted from all ÖSV squads, but fought his way back and made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère on December 14th . At the end of the season, he won the silver medal in his favorite discipline in the Austrian championships, just behind Philipp Schörghofer . In the 2014/15 season, Walch struggled with a stubborn tibia and was unable to achieve the desired European Cup results in the following winter. But he managed to win the Far East Cup in Nozawa Onsen . At the beginning of the next season he suffered a severe concussion and a fracture of the left shoulder socket in a training fall . In March 2017 he was crowned Austrian runner-up in giant slalom for a second time.

In January 2018, he qualified for the second round for the first time in his fifth World Cup giant slalom on Chuenisbärgli . He finished the race in 14th place and won his first World Cup points. At the end of the season he was again Austrian runner-up.
