Maha Sarakham (also Mahasarakam , in Thai มหาสารคาม ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง มหาสารคาม ) in the Thai province of Maha Sarakham . It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Maha Sarakham and the province of Maha Sarakham.

The city of Maha Sarakham has 40,154 inhabitants (as of 2012).

The province of Maha Sarakham is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the Isan . The city of Maha Sarakham is located in the heart of the Isan, in the middle of the Khorat plateau . The distance to the capital Bangkok is about 450 kilometers.

Economy and Importance

Agriculture, primarily rice cultivation and sugar cane cultivation as well as the breeding of cattle, water buffalo and pigs, is the main occupation in this province. There is also sericulture and silk weaving .

Maha Sarakham is mainly known for its educational facilities and is known as the "center of education" in northeast Thailand or Taxila des Isan , which means "center with all educational opportunities".

festival

The "Maha Sarakham Bun Boek Fa Festival and Red Cross Fair" is a festival and fair, at which each district appears with a pageant and exhibits and sells products from the different districts. The festival is held in honor of the mother of rice Mae Phosop or Goddess of Rice ( แม่ โพสพ ).
