Mahala ( Ukrainian Магала , Russian Магала Magala , Romanian Mahala ) is a village in the Ukrainian Chernivtsi Oblast with 2740 inhabitants. It is mainly inhabited by Romanian people.
Geographical location
Mahala is located in Novoselytsia district at an altitude of 167 m on the left bank of the Prut , about 6 km northeast of Chernivtsi in the area of eastern Bucovina . In the south of the village the national trunk road N 03 meets the international trunk road M 19 .
history
The village, first mentioned in writing in the 18th century, belonged to the Principality of Moldova until 1774 and was then incorporated into the new Crown Land of Bukovina by Austria . Since 1884 there has been a stopping point to the southwest of the village on what is now the Chernivtsi – Ocnița railway line .
After the end of the First World War , the village became part of Romania ( Cernăuți district ). In the course of the annexation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina, it fell to the Soviet Union on August 2, 1940, and again to Romania from 1941–1945. After the Second World War , the village came back to the Soviet Union and was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , it became part of independent Ukraine in 1991.

In October 2017 the village became the administrative center of the rural community of Mahala ( Магальська громада ) with a total of 11,647 inhabitants (January 1, 2018). In particular, these are, in addition to Mahala, the villages of Buda ( Буда ) with 1470 inhabitants, Ostryzja ( Остриця ) with 2432 inhabitants and Prut with 502 inhabitants and Ridkiwzi with 4503 inhabitants.
