Mahmoud Hamdy Zakzouk ( Arabic محمود حمدي زقزوق Mahmud Hamdi Zaqzuq , DMG Maḥmūd Ḥamdī Zaqzūq ; * December 27, 1933 in ad-Daqahliyya Governorate ; † April 1, 2020 in Egypt ) was an Egyptian theologian and from 1996 to mid-January 2011 Egyptian Foundation Minister , d. H. Minister for Religious Foundations. His official title was Wazīr al-Auqāf in Arabic and Minister of Awqaf in English. As such, he administered all foundations under Islamic law . He was also President of the Supreme Islamic Council of the Arab Republic of Egypt . For thesake of health, Zakzouk no longer made himself available for the reshuffle ofthe government under Prime Minister Ahmed Schafik on January 29, 2011. He had been tired of office for years and only stayedin officeat the urgent request of President Mubarak . In the religious hierarchy of power in the country the Minister of Religion ranks number two behind the Grand Imam , since March 2010, this is the Sheikh of Azhar , Ahmed el-Tayeb .

Life

Zakzouk has a solid academic education in Europe, including a. in Germany, enjoyed. He received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Munich . He spoke fluent German and was married to a German.

He has been professor of philosophy at al-Azhar University since 1968 . There he was Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Theology from 1987 to 1995 and its Vice President in 1995. Many of his scientific publications on questions of philosophy , ethics , oriental studies , theology and Islamic studies were made in various European languages. Through his participation in numerous European conferences, especially in the religious and cultural dialogue, he has made a name for himself in interreligious dialogue worldwide.

Zakzouk is President of the Egyptian Philosophical Society, a member of the Islamic Research Academy in Cairo and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts Salzburg . He has received numerous awards, including a. the Egyptian State Prize for the Humanities 1997.

Zakzouk on apostasy

On October 25, 2007, Zakzouk was a guest at the Osnabrück peace talks . According to the International Society for Human Rights , Zakzouk had previously insisted on the legality of the death penalty for apostates in Islam in the controversy surrounding Mohammed Hegazy , who converted from Islam to Christianity , which led to disputes in the run-up to the peace talks. In an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung , Zakzouk denied the allegations.

In his book Questions on Islam (2004) he stated on freedom of belief in Islam that there is freedom of belief and freedom of opinion for everyone, but only in the private sphere. Anyone who publicly disseminates “[wrong] thoughts that contradict the creeds and morals of other people” is “violating the general order of the state in which he lives, because this spreads doubts among his fellow citizens Riot. Anyone who behaves like this will be subject to punishment. He can even be charged with high treason, punished with death, not because he has renounced his faith, but because his thoughts have spread confusion in the state and violated its order. "
