Mahmut Bilgili

Mahmut Bilgili (born around 1954 in Sarız ; died shortly after February 5, 1987 in Deventer , Netherlands , or the surrounding area) was a Turkish lawyer who was killed on the orders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Bilgili studied law at Ankara University and came into contact with the PKK through his studies and his marriage. He acted as a trial observer in court proceedings against PKK members either after the military coup in Turkey in 1980 or, as reported by Kurdish PKK opponent and lawyer Hüseyin Yıldırım, the year before. He was arrested twice because of this activity and, according to the PKK dissident Selim Çürükkaya, was severely tortured in police custody. According to testimony from a defector from the PKK, Bilgili was finally sentenced to long imprisonment by the Diyarbakır Military Court for membership in the PKK. A trial observer described the defector's allegations on the day of the trial on July 14, 1982.

Bilgili spent five years in the infamous Diyarbakır Prison . After his release from prison, Bilgili fled to the Netherlands, applied for asylum there in 1986 and was active within the PKK.

Duran Kalkan , who was then responsible for Europe at the PKK, asked Bilgili to travel to Syria to see Abdullah Öcalan . Bilgili refused. According to the testimony of the Kurdish human rights activist Şerafettin Kaya , Bilgili told him that Abdullah Öcalan had asked him to write a book about imprisonment in which certain people were criticized or accused of treason. Bilgili refused to go to Ocalan and write such a book. He disappeared in Deventer on February 5, 1987. After investigations by the Dutch police, he was kidnapped and detained in Hengelo in the apartment of organization member Ömer Tel. His body was discovered on March 26, 1987 by a boatman and recovered from the Twente Canal near Markelo . The police initially suspected internal disputes within the PKK as the motive. Bilgili was too moderate.

The autopsy report showed that Bilgili had been severely tortured before he died. PKK member Ömer Tel, who was interrogated shortly afterwards about a PKK attack on Kurds belonging to the Rizgari organization, said that he had helped to remove the body. Bilgili was buried in his homeland, Sarız County in Kayseri .

Interpretations

The retired police superintendent van Soest, who was also involved in the murder of Bilgili at the time, wrote a book about the case in 2006 with the help of journalist Elzo Springer with the title "Oh, what hij het ...?" In it he tries to prove the connection to the murder of Olof Palme . According to this, Bilgili was a high-ranking member of the PKK, reportedly provided the Swedish police with information about the murder of Palme and was therefore murdered.

Taner Akçam said that Bilgili's relatives informed him about the murder at the time. The PKK is a kind of mafia. Whoever speaks will be killed. However, it did not save Bilgili that he was silent.

The Kurdish PKK opponent Hüseyin Yıldırım claims that Duran Kalkan ordered the murder of Bilgili because he had to prove his loyalty to Öcalan. Kalkan's posting to Europe was his last chance.
