Mahmut Oltan Sungurlu

Mahmut Oltan Sungurlu (* 1936 in Gümüşhane , Anatolia ) is a Turkish politician from the motherland party ANAP ( Anavatan Partisi ) , who was Minister of Justice four times and Minister of Defense for a few months in 1996 .

Life

Sungurlu completed a law degree at the University of Istanbul after attending the Anatolian Boys' High School in Bursa (Bursa Anadolu Erkek Lisesi) . He joined the motherland party ANAP, for which he was first elected to the Grand National Assembly in the parliamentary elections on November 6, 1983 . After his re-elections on October 29, 1987 , October 20, 1991 and December 24, 1995 to April 18, 1999, he represented the interests of Gümüşhane .

On October 17, 1986, Sungurlu was appointed by Prime Minister Turgut Özal to succeed Nejat Eldem as Minister of Justice (Adalet Bakanı) and held this office in the first Özal cabinet until September 16, 1987, whereupon Halil Ertem succeeded him. He held the office of Minister of Justice again from December 21, 1987 until his replacement by Mehmet Topaç on June 27, 1989 in the second Özal cabinet . In the course of a restructuring of the second Özal cabinet, he took over from Topaç on March 30, 1989 again as Minister of Justice, which he held until the end of Özal's tenure on November 9, 1989. He then held the post of Minister of Justice between November 9, 1989 and June 23, 1991 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Yıldırım Akbulut . In the second cabinet of Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz he served from March 6 to June 28, 1996 as Minister of Defense (Milli Savunma Bakanı) .

Most recently, Sungurlu was again Minister of Justice in the third cabinet of Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz between June 30, 1997 and his replacement by Hasan Denizkırdu on August 4, 1998 .
