Mai Hontama ( Japanese 本 玉 真 唯 , Hontama Mai; born August 30, 1999 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese tennis player .

Career

Hozumi began playing tennis at the age of four, her preferred surface is the hard court. She has not yet won a title at the ITF Women's Circuit .

At the US Open 2016 she reached the semi-finals of the junior doubles with her partner Anastasia Zarycká . That same year, Hontama also made her debut on the WTA Tour when she received a wild card to qualify for the Toray Pan Pacific Open . She surprisingly defeated Abigail Spears 7: 5 and 6: 3 in the first round , before losing to her compatriot Miyu Kato 2: 6 and 1: 6 in the second round .

In 2017, she competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments in the junior singles and doubles competitions. She reached the quarter-finals in the junior singles at the Australian Open , the second round in both the junior singles and doubles at Wimbledon, and the last sixteen at the US Open in the junior doubles.

In 2018 she received another wildcard for qualifying for the Toray Pan Pacific Open , but already failed in the first round against her compatriot Ayano Shimizu with 1: 6 and 4: 6.

In 2019 she started qualifying for the Kunming Open , but failed in the opening match against Miharu Imanishi with 0: 6 and 2: 6. In qualifying for the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic , she lost her opening match against Danielle Lao 6: 4, 4: 6 and 3: 6.
