The Maibachl is a thermal spring at the foot of the Dobratsch in Villach in the Austrian state of Carinthia . From a hydrological point of view, it is one of a series of thermal springs that were taken in Warmbad Villach for spa and medicinal purposes. The Maibachl springs form a natural overflow of the Warmbad thermal springs and only flow when the snowmelts on the Dobratsch or after prolonged intense rainfall. In the vicinity of the main springs, two spring basins have formed over time, which were additionally dammed up by stone layers of the bathers and now with a depth of approx. 1 m to 1.2 m invite you to relax in the 28 ° C warm thermal water.

In 2005 the Maibachl was declared a natural monument.

The Warmbader springs and thus the Maibachl rise at an altitude of 510  m above sea level. A. at the eastern foot of the Dobratsch. This is mainly made up of Wetterstein limestone, and on the eastern flank it is divided into individual clods via staggered fractures. These clods sink deeper and deeper towards the east and thus the water-bearing layers reach depths in which the seepage water is heated to over 38 ° C. Upstream red clay layers in the area of Villach Warmbad form a water-impermeable border to the bottom and to the east and thus force the heated seepage water upwards. The thermal water mixes with colder water near the surface and comes to the surface in several springs at around 29 ° C.

The Maibachl springs are approx. 15 m higher than the thermal springs in Warmbad, which constantly carry water, and therefore only flow if the water flow underground is sufficiently strong. In the event of particularly heavy rainfall or very rapid snowmelt, the Hungerbach spring begins to bubble a few hundred meters away from the Maibachl springs and a few meters higher . This stream then flows together with the Maibachl and the outflows of the Warmbader Quellen as Zillerbach south of Villach into the Gail .

Since 2003, an automatic measuring station from the Carinthian Hydrographic Service has been recording both the temperature and chemical composition as well as the total flow rate of the Maibachl springs. The mean discharge from 2003–2011 was 26 l / s, the highest value was measured on November 2, 2003 with 412 l / s. The water temperature fluctuated between 14.4 and 31.6 ° C during this period, the maximum conductivity was 721 μS / cm.

Healing effect

The Warmbader thermal springs contain various ingredients that are beneficial to health. In addition to calcium (osteoporosis, urinary tract infections) and magnesium (cardiovascular diseases), the water also contains hydrogen carbonate and other medicinal substances. In the spa, the main spring comes to the surface directly in the thermal pool through the gravel floor and its healing effects are therefore immediately available to those seeking relaxation.
