Maikel Vistel

Maikel Vistel (* 1983 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , composition ).

Vistel comes from a family of musicians; his older brother Jorge is also a jazz musician (trumpet). After graduating as a saxophone teacher at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, he was appointed to teach at the same institution for three years.

Vistel then worked as musical director in the group Havana Latin Millenium , with whom he performed internationally at the Monterey Jazz Festival and Bermuda Jazz . Together with his brother Jorge he founded the band Vistel Brothers . In 2006 they decided to continue their artistic career from Madrid and migrated to Spain. In 2010 they presented the album Evolution with the Vistel Brothers on Fresh Sound Records . In a trio with Reinier Elizarde and Juanma Barroso, the Big Music label created the album Trio On , which was nominated at the Cubadisco Awards 2014 in the jazz category. In 2015 he produced his first solo album entitled Pasos .

Vistel performed as a saxophonist and arranger with Calle 13 for several years . He also worked with musicians such as Mark Turner , Roy Hargrove , James Carter , Joe Lovano , Greg Osby , Román Filiú , David Virelles , Aruán Ortiz , Gary Thomas , Esperanza Spalding , Dado Moroni , Dafnis Prieto , Javier Vercher and Steve Coleman . He can also be heard on albums by Apolo Bass, Miguel Ángel Chastang , Juanma Barroso, Mariano Valdallo and the Van Assert Vistel Project .
