Majesco Entertainment Company is an American computer game publisher based in Hazlet , New Jersey . The company released BloodRayne , Psychonauts , Cooking Mama , Zumba Fitness and the new editions of A Boy and His Blob , among others . From 2003 to 2016 Majesco was listed on the NASDAQ .
history
The company was founded in 1986 as Majesco Sales in Edison , New Jersey . Initially, the company limited itself to re-releasing old 16-bit console games at a budget price, for which it took over the Acclaim cartridge factory in Mexico and reissued games for SNES and Mega Drive . In 1998 Majesco brought the new editions of the Mega Drive, the Sega Genesis 3, onto the market, and in 2001 a new version of the unsuccessful handheld Game Gear .
It was only gradually that Majesco started developing its own titles. In 1999 the company acquired the rights to A Boy and His Blob from the bankruptcy estate of the original developer Absolute Entertainment . Also in 1999 their own development team was set up under the name Pipe Dream Interactive, which ported Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six to the Dreamcast console and brought various Bomberman offshoots for GameCube and Game Boy Advance onto the market. Was published in 2002, the action game BloodRayne by Terminal Reality about Majesco. In 2003 Majesco merged with ConnectivCorp, a no longer operating company, and through this reverse IPO became a public company listed on NASDAQ. ConnectivCorp later changed its name to Majesco Holdings Inc. on April 13, 2004 and was listed under the symbol COOL. In the same year Majesco signed a publishing contract with Double Fine Productions for the release of the action adventure Psychonauts . Double Fine had previously looked in vain for a financing partner before Majesco offered to support the project. The game was released in 2005 and remained a flop despite numerous critical acclaim. With only 200,000 units sold in the first year, the game put both the developer and Majesco itself in temporary financial distress. In 2011 Majesco sold Psychonauts ' publishing rights back to Double Fine. In general, Majesco has repeatedly received good reviews with its larger productions, but these have not been reflected in the sales figures. Therefore, from the 2010s on, the focus shifted to casual games such as Cooking Mama and Zumba Fitness . In 2011, Quick Hit, a company specializing in social gaming , was acquired.
During its listing on the NASDAQ, Majesco was threatened with delisting several times due to its low stock market price , but was able to avert this repeatedly. On December 1, 2016, the company then took over the biotech company PolarityTE in a similar reverse IPO as in 2003, officially ceased all computer game publications and developments and changed its name to PolarityTE. In mid-2017, long-time Majesco managing director Jesse Sutton acquired the computer game assets from PolarityTE and continued to run Majesco as a private company. In January 2018, Liquid Media Group announced the acquisition of a 51% majority stake in Majesco.
