Maksymilian Antoni Piotrowski (also: Maximilian Anton Piotrowski , born June 8, 1813 in Bromberg , † November 29, 1875 in Königsberg ) was a Polish painter and professor at the Königsberg Art Academy .

Life

Piotrowski's father Andrzej owned a bakery. His mother Teresa, b. Baranowska had come to Bromberg from Koronowo in 1812 . After graduating from high school, the budding artist left his hometown and moved to Berlin. From 1833 to 1838 he studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin under Wilhelm Hensel . He then attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow until 1840 . In 1842 he went to Italy. While traveling through Munich, he made contact with the painters Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach . In 1844 he returned to Berlin and completed his studies here. He stayed in Berlin until 1847. He was involved in the design of a monumental history painting on the Anglo-Afghan war that was never completed .

In 1848 he was briefly arrested for participating in demonstrations in Berlin as part of the March Revolution . Piotrowski also took part in similar rallies in Bromberg and Posen . Drawings were made for the experiences. In 1849 he received a call to Königsberg at the Prussian Academy of Arts there . There he held the chair for drawing antique plasterwork (figure subject) for 26 years. In 1853 he adorned the middle part of the ceiling in the waiting room of the Königsberg Palace with allegories of the benefits of the railway. The wall paintings in the auditorium of the Königsberg Albertus University, created in collaboration with Gustav Graef and Georg Knorr between 1861 and 1872, also attracted great attention . Several times he exhibited works at exhibitions of the Cracow Society of Friends of Fine Arts . Piotrowski's body was brought to Bromberg and buried there in the Starofarnym cemetery.
