Painter of the Boston Orestes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The painter of the Boston Orestes ( English Painter of the Boston Orest ) was a Paestanisch - red-figure vase painter . After Asteas and Python he was one of the most important representatives of the Asteas Python workshop and thus also of Paestan vase painting as a whole.

The painter of Orestes in Boston , together with his colleague, the Aphrodite painter , marked the later stage of the Asteas Python workshop. He was a pupil of the python, who had a great influence especially on the early phase of the painter of the Boston Orestes. An early bell crater with an unusually high, cylindrical vessel body shows a boar hunt, the details of which, however, do not refer to a specific mythical boar hunt. The composition of the picture, with its backgrounds and different spatial levels in which the figures were distributed, speaks in favor of adopting a large-format mural. The coat boys on the back are reminiscent of the late python , as do the design of the hair, the pattern of the robes and the ornaments . On the vase of names , a neck amphora , the painter of the Boston Orestes shows the meeting of Orestes and Elektra at the grave of their father Agamemnon . The vase painter repeats the motif on two other vases in almost identical shapes, each time Elektra wears a black robe with red stripes.

In general, the painter of Orestes in Boston repeats the same repertoire over and over again. On the front of the vessels, Dionysus is usually shown with a representative of his entourage, which is in line with the workshop's practices. On the back he almost always draws two young men in the cloak, which appear particularly monotonous to him because he almost always depicts the same two basic types without variations. Likewise, themes from the mythological area are rare in the workshop. He shows warriors on three vases, and on two of them he also shows women in local costume at the libation . The vase painter rarely goes beyond the standard production of the workshop, whereby he is also a link to the later, late Paestan painters of Naples 1778 and painter of Naples 2585 , who no longer belong to the workshop .

Image compositions and ornamentation by the painter of the Boston Orestes had a significant influence on the Campanian Danaid painter . The painter of the Boston Orestes should not be confused with the likewise Paestan painter of the Geneva Orestes because of the similarity of the name .
