Malte Neumann (born June 28, 1968 in Hamburg ) is a German musician and keyboard player . He is a founding member of the Hamburg rock band Selig , one of the most important German rock bands in the 1990s, of which he was keyboardist from 1993 to 2014. After the band disbanded in 1997, he worked a. a. as a remixer together with drummer Stephan Eggert on the Saunaclub project and in various Hamburg media companies. The band Selig has been reunited since 2008.

biography

At the age of nine he began his initially classically oriented musical training on the cello and as a member of the North German Children's Choir (later Hamburger Alsterspatzen ). With the choir he performed at the Hamburg State Opera a. a. in Hansel and Gretel , Der Rosenkavalier , Parsifal and won the highly regarded 1st place in the renowned international choir competition in Llangollen. He learned the keyboard and piano mostly self-taught.

After graduating from high school in 1987, he joined his first student band "Pickup 88" in the Hamburg suburb of Ahrensburg as a keyboardist, where he made friends with Jan Plewka - who later became the singer of the band Selig - and was a member of his band Boss shortly before it broke up Barnes . After completing his community service and training as a sound engineer, he worked as a freelance sound engineer in both dubbing and events and played together with drummer Stephan Eggert in the Hamburg band "Get Frubi".

After his first professional LP production with the Hamburg indie band Dark Orange in 1992 on the [Hyperium] label, he toured Germany-wide in 1993 with Philip Boa & the Voodooclub.

With the founding of Selig , which signed a record deal with Epic / Sony Music in 1993, he ended his engagement with Philip Boa. On February 26, 1994, shortly before the start of their first tour, his daughter Melina was born and he married his then partner three years later.

Between 1994 and 1997 three albums and the soundtrack for Knockin 'on Heaven's Door were created , the band won the 1995 Echo (category "National Music Video of the Year" for "If I Wanted"). Neumann toured across Germany and the surrounding countries, shot a. a. in Cape Town and London and after a first stay in America recorded the third Selig album in New York as part of the "South by Southwest" festival (Austin / Texas).

In summer / autumn 1997 - after the production of the "Blender" album and at the peak of their success at the time - Jan Plewka , Christian Neander , Leo Schmidthals , Stephan Eggert and Malte Neumann dissolved their band Selig.

After this personal setback and a first recording session with Kung Fu , he continued his musical activity in 1998 in the remix duo Saunaclub together with Eggert for various national and international artists such as Smudo , Alphaville and Echt .

In 2000 his wife and Malte Neumann separated. He interrupted his musical activities and worked for various Hamburg media companies until 2008. In 2007 he joined the Mensa eV association , volunteered with his daughter Melina in the ASV Hamburg eV in youth work and began studying meteorology at Hamburg University.

In August 2008 the band Selig reunited . Since then he has been active again as a keyboardist, he interrupted his studies for the winter semester 2009. In October 2014 Neumann left the band due to artistic and personal differences.
