Mamintal H. Tamano (born December 25, 1928 in Tamparan , Lanao del Sur ; † May 18, 1994 ) was a Filipino politician of the Nacionalista Party who was a member of the Senate from 1969 to 1972 and again between 1987 and 1992 .

Life

After Tamano graduated from Lanao High School with honors, he began an undergraduate degree at the University of the Philippines and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a law degree at the University of the Philippines in 1953 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He then became a justice of the peace in Lanao del Sur and later completed a postgraduate degree in law at Cornell University , which he completed in 1958 with a Master of Laws (LL.M.).

On December 30, 1959, Tamano became vice governor of the province of Lanao del Sur and held this position for ten years until December 30, 1969. In the elections of November 11, 1969, he won eighth place of the eight available places with 3,458,193 votes in the Senate and remained a senator until President Marcos imposed martial law on September 21, 1972.

After the fall of Marcos in the course of the EDSA revolution (Peoples Power Revolution) named after Epifanio de los Santos Avenue on March 25, 1986, Tamano was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister by President Corazon Aquino and thus Deputy to Salvador Laurel . In the elections of May 11, 1987, he ran again for the Senate as a member of the United Nationalist Democratic Organization (UNIDO) for the electoral alliance Lakas ng Bayan LABAN. He was re-elected Senator and took 22nd place out of 24 seats in the Senate out of 54 candidates with 8,102,231 votes. In the subsequent election on May 11, 1992, he applied for the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP). However, with 3,642,828 votes, he only came in 28th place and then left the Senate. During his five-year membership in the Senate, he advocated the establishment of an Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), pacification of Mindanao and the use of natural resources there to improve living conditions in Mindanao.

Tamano, who died on May 18, 1994 of complications from an intracerebral hemorrhage , was married to Haji Putri Zorayda Abbas and had nine children with them, including the lawyer Adel Tamano , who was president of the University of Manila , founded in 1965 between 2007 and 2009 and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Senate in the elections on May 10, 2010 for the Nacionalista Party.
