Coryphantha cornifera is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cornifera is derived from the Latin words cornus for 'horn' and -fer for 'carrying' and refers to the hooked central spine of the species.

Coryphantha cornifera grows individually with spherical to egg-shaped, light green to glaucous green shoots that reach heights of up to 12 centimeters. The up to 2.5 centimeters long, diamond-shaped to conical warts overlap somewhat brick-shaped. The single, dark-colored central spine , which can also be missing, is strong and curved downwards. The 16 to 17 grayish radial spines are 1 to 1.2 inches long.

The yellow flowers are up to 7 centimeters long and 6 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha cornifera is distributed on limestone gravel in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Querétaro , Guanajuato , San Luis Potosí , Jalisco and Zacatecas .

The first description as Mammillaria cornifera by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Charles Lemaire placed the species in the genus Coryphantha in 1868 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocactus cornifer (DC.) Poselger (1853) and Cactus cornifer (DC.) Kuntze (1891). Other synonyms include Mammillaria cornuta Hildm. ex K.Schum. (1898) and Coryphantha cornuta (Hildm. Ex K.Schum.) A.Berger (1929).

Coryphantha cornifera is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
