Mammillaria densispina is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet densispina means '(lat. Densispinus) densely spiked'.

description

Mammillaria densispina usually grows individually. The spherical to short cylindrical, dark green shoots are up to 12 centimeters high and up to 6 centimeters in diameter. The warts are firm to soft fleshy, conical in shape and without milky juice . The axillae are woolly at first, later naked. The 6  central spines are straight, stiff, yellow, often with a dark tip, and 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The up to 25 unequal radial spines are stiff, slender, needle-like and spread out. They are yellow and grow to an inch or two in length.

The light yellow flowers are funnel-shaped. They become 1.5 to 2 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The greenish-pink fruits contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria densispina is common in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí , Guanajuato , Jalisco , Aguascalientes , Durango , Querétaro and Zacatecas .

The first description was in 1894 as Cactus densispinus by John Merle Coulter . Mary Katharine Brandegee introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1905 .

Synonyms are Cactus densispinus J.M.Coult. (1894), Neomammillaria densispina (JMCoult.) Britton & Rose (1923), Krainzia densispina (JMCoult.) Doweld (2000), Mammillaria buxbaumiana Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria buxbaumeriana Repp. (1987, nom. Invalid ICBN -Article 61.1).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
