Mammillaria klissingiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the nursery owner Carl Ludwig Klissing from Barth , whofinanced Hugo Baum's travelsin Mexico.

description

Mammillaria klissingiana grows solitary and sometimes branched. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots have a rounded apex. They grow up to 16 centimeters high and reach a diameter of 9 centimeters. The warts are rounded-pyramidal to conical in shape. They contain milk juice . The axils are provided with numerous, 1 centimeter long bristles, which become more woolly in the flowering zone. The 2 to 4  central spines are sub-like, white with a dark brown tip and 0.2 inches long. The 30 to 35 radial spines are spread out, straight, white and up to 0.5 centimeters long.

The pink colored flowers are up to 1 centimeter long and 0.8 centimeters in diameter. The club-like fruits are 0.5 to 0.6 centimeters in size. They contain dark reddish brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria klissingiana is common in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas near Ciudad Viktoria and Calabazos (870–2300 meters high), in Nuevo León and in San Luis Potosí .

It was first described in 1927 by Friedrich Bödeker . Synonyms for Mammillaria klissingiana are: Mammillaria brauneana Boed. (1933), Mammillaria formosa var. Klissingiana (. Boed) E.Kuhn (.. 1981, nom inval ICBN -Article 33.3) and Mammillaria hahniana . Var klissingiana (. Boed) E.Kuhn (1981, nom inval.. ICBN - Article 33.3).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
