Mammillaria schiedeana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German doctor Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede , a friend of Carl August Ehrenberg , who together with the gardener Ferdinand Deppe roamed Mexico as a plant collector. He is also the discoverer of the species.

Mammillaria schiedeana usually grows in groups with turnip roots. The dark green, flattened shoots are spherical in shape and 5 to 10 centimeters high and 1.5 to 6 centimeters in diameter. The warts are cylindrical in shape and slightly tapered towards the tip. They do not contain milk juice . The axillae are covered with white woolly hair that extends beyond the warts or they are bare. Central spines are completely absent. The up to 120 radial spines are very numerous. They are arranged radially in several rows, somewhat downy-haired and white with a yellowish base and a length of 6 millimeters.

The flowers are white to light pink and 1.2 to 1.8 inches long. The fruits are orange-red to bright carmine red or even whitish. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria schiedeana is common in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas , Hidalgo , Guanajuato , Querétaro and San Luis Potosí .

The first description was in 1838 by Carl August Ehrenberg .

  • Mammillaria schiedeana subsp. dumetorum (JAPurpus) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1912 as Mammillaria dumetorum by Josef Anton Purpus . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria schiedeana . Synonyms are Ebnerella dumetorum (JAPurpus) Buxb. (1951), Mammillaria picta var. Dumetorum (JAPurpus) E. Kuhn (1975, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Mammillaria schiedeana var. Dumetorum (JAPurpus) Glass & RAFoster (1981). The shoots of the subspecies are 2.5 to 7.5 inches in diameter. It has 30 to 40 radial spines.
  • Mammillaria schiedeana subsp. gisela (Mart.-Aval. & Glass) Lüthy :
    It was first described in 1997 as Mammillaria gisela by José Guadalupe Martínez-Avalos and Charles Edward Glass . Jonas Martin Lüthy introduced the species in 1998 as a subspecies to Mammillaria schiedeana . The shoots of the subspecies are 1.5 to 4 centimeters in diameter. It has 16 to 26 radial spines, which are arranged in two rows.
  • Mammillaria schiedeana subsp. schiedeana :
    Synonyms are Chilita schiedeana (C.Ehrenb.) Orcutt (1926), Ebnerella schiedeana (C.Ehrenb.) Buxb. (1951) and Escobariopsis schiedeana (C.Ehrenb.) Doweld (2000). The shoots of the nominate form are up to 4 centimeters in diameter. It has 70 to 120 radial spines that are arranged in several rows.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
