Mammillaria scrippsiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae).
The specific epithet honors the patron of science and founder of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California Edward W. Scripps (1854–1926).
description
Mammillaria scrippsiana grows individually or sometimes in groups. The blue-green, spherical to short cylindrical shoots are 10 centimeters high and measure an equally large diameter. The warts are firm and almost ovoid in shape. They carry plenty of milky juice . The axillae are covered with wool. Usually 2 central spines are present. They are brown, slightly splayed and 5 to 10 millimeters long. The 8 to 10 radial spines are slender, somewhat bristle-like, pink with a reddish tip and 7 millimeters long.
The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are pink-yellow to deep purple-pink. They measure 1 centimeter in diameter as well as in length. The club-shaped fruits are whitish pink to red. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria scrippsiana is common in the Mexican states of Durango , Jalisco , Nayarit , Sinaloa and Zacatecas .
It was first described in 1923 as Neomammillaria scrippsiana by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . Charles Russell Orcutt introduced the species to Mammillaria in 1926 . Synonyms of Mammillaria scrippsiana (Britton & Rose) Orcutt are Mammillaria scrippsiana var. Autlanensis (RTCraig.) EYDawson (1948), Mammillaria pseudoscrippsiana Backeb. (1952), Mammillaria scrippsiana var. Rooksbyana Backeb. (1952) and Mammillaria scrippsiana var. Armeria Repp. (1987).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
