Mammillaria senilis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet senilis means 'senile'.
description
Mammillaria senilis grows in groups. The spherical to cylindrical shaped shoots are 15 centimeters high and 10 centimeters in diameter. The conical, blunt warts do not contain any milky sap . The axillae are covered with wool and bristles. The 4 to 6 central spines are white with a yellow tip; the top and bottom are hooked. The 30 to 40 radial spines are thinner than the central spines. They are white and up to 2 inches long.
The orange-red flowers are 6 to 7 inches long and 5.5 to 6 inches in diameter. They have a slender, scaled tube 4 centimeters long. The silvery-red to greenish-white fruits are elongated. They are up to 4 inches long and 1.2 inches in diameter. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria senilis is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Durango , Jalisco , Nayarit , Sinaloa and in the south of Zacatecas .
It was first described in 1850 by Conrad Loddiges in Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dycks Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849 . Synonyms are: Mamillopsis senile (. Lodd) Britton & Rose (1920), Cochemiea senile (. Lodd) Orcutt (1922), Mammillaria senilis var. Diguetii F.ACWeber (1904), Mamillopsis diguetii (FACWeber) Britton & Rose (1920) , Mamillopsis senile var. diguetii (FACWeber) Krainz (1967) and Mammillaria diguetii (FACWeber) DRHunt (1971).
Mammillaria senilis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified as not endangered in nature.
