Mammillaria zephyranthoides is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet zephyranthoides means '(Greek zephyros west wind; anthos flower)similar to Zephyranthes '.
description
Mammillaria zephyranthoides grows individually. The flattened, spherical shoots are dark blue-green. They grow up to 8 centimeters high and measure up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The soft fleshy warts are conical in shape and have a rounded tip. They are up to 2.5 centimeters long and do not contain milk juice . The axillae are bare. A central spine is present. It is hooked, white to yellowish or even reddish brown, short or up to 1.4 centimeters long. The 12 to 18 radial spines are very slender, white and 8 to 10 millimeters long.
The white flowers have a pink central stripe and measure up to 4 centimeters in diameter. The egg-shaped fruits are red. They contain black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria zephyranthoides is common in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Guanajuato , Hidalgo , Mexico , Oaxaca , Puebla , Querétaro and San Luis Potosí .
It was first described in 1841 by Michael Joseph François Scheidweiler (1799–1861). Synonyms of Mammillaria zephyranthoides Scheidw. are Mammillaria fennellii Hopfer (1843) and Mammillaria zephyranthiflora Pfeiff. (1843).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
