Manfred Abelein (born October 20, 1930 in Stuttgart ; † January 17, 2008 in Ellwangen ) was a German politician ( CDU ) and mountaineer .

Life and work

Manfred Abelein was the son of the commercial clerk Martin Abelein and was a Catholic . Most recently he lived temporarily in Berkshire (Great Britain) and was married to Ingeborg Eisenacher-Abelein, an occupational physician, since 1980.

Abelein completed a degree in law, political science and economics a. a. as a student of Hermann Raschhofer . From 1961 to 1965 he headed Heinrich Krone's ministerial office as a personal advisor . Initially a private lecturer since 1966, he taught politics and public law from 1968 as a full professor at the University of Regensburg . He was known for his frequently repeated course "Current Problems in Tax Policy". From 1991 to 1996 he was Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development .

Abelein was a passionate mountaineer, sports pilot and trained air force pilot. In 1977 he climbed the Illimani massif (6439 m) in the Andes in Bolivia , in Austria he made the first ascent of the south face in 1978 and, at the same time, the first winter ascent of the Hohen Munde (2662 m) in the Tyrolean Leutasch Valley. He also took part in the first European Tibet expedition in decades from March to May 1980 and climbed Shisha Pangma (8027 m). Abelein drew attention to himself in 1979 with a non-stop flight from New York to Cologne.

From 1965 to 1990 Abelein was a member of the German Bundestag as the successor to Rudolf Vogel . He has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Aalen - Heidenheim constituency and received over 50% of the votes in each election. He represented a conservative policy and was a sharp critic of the East and Germany policies of the social-liberal federal government.

His successor as a constituency member was Georg Brunnhuber , who was a member of the German Bundestag until 2009.

Abelein was also a member of the North Atlantic Assembly , of which he was Vice President from 1985 to 1987, after having headed the German delegation since 1983.
