Manfred Curbach (born September 28, 1956 in Dortmund ) is a German civil engineer and university professor. He is one of the leading minds in the development of textile concrete or carbon concrete .

Life

Manfred Curbach passed his Abitur in June 1976 at the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium in Dortmund. From 1977 to 1982 he studied civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering, at the Technical University of Dortmund . In 1980 he was accepted into the German National Academic Foundation . After receiving his degree, he did research on “Bridge Building in the USA” and “ Robert Maillart ” with David P. Billington as a scholarship holder at Princeton University in the USA .

From 1982 to 1988 Manfred Curbach was a research assistant to Josef Eibl, initially at the University of Dortmund, later at the University of Karlsruhe, where he also received his doctorate in 1987. In 1988 he moved to the engineering office Köhler + Seitz as a project manager, where he was a partner from 1994 to 2004.

Manfred Curbach has held the professorship for solid construction at the TU Dresden since August 1994 , which is still his main field of activity today. Since 1997 he has been a test engineer for structural engineering, specializing in solid construction, and since 2005 a partner in the newly founded engineering office Curbach Bösche Ingenieurpartner, Dresden. In December 2014 the company CarboCon GmbH was founded, which specializes in design, construction, calculation and building with carbon fiber reinforced concrete . Curbach is one of the three founding shareholders.

research

Textile / carbon concrete

Manfred Curbach works in basic research and in application-oriented research on the development of textile concrete and carbon concrete up to its implementation in practice. From 1999 to 2011 Curbach was the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 528 “Textile reinforcement for structural reinforcement and repair”. As part of this research program, the new composite material textile concrete made from high-strength fine concrete and high-performance fibers (made from various materials such as alkali-resistant glass, later mainly carbon fibers ) was developed and researched and put into practice in first pilot projects in cooperation with companies from the construction industry.

Curbach is the consortium leader in one of the ten projects that are funded with up to 45 million euros in project Zwanzig20 of the BMBF . The aim of the consortium C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite is to introduce a completely new construction method with carbon fiber reinforced concrete (carbon concrete).

Other research focuses are the material behavior of concrete under multi-axial loads or at high loading speeds.

Impact

Curbach works in basic research on the subject of high-speed dynamics / impact for concrete and concrete structures and has set up a globally recognized center on this topic.

Multi-axiality

Curbach developed decisive results on the multi-axial loading of concrete, in particular of ultra-high-strength concrete, and set up a research group on this topic, which is very demanding in both experimental and theoretical terms.

bridges

By organizing the annual Dresden Bridge Construction Symposium, Curbach succeeded in creating a national and meanwhile international center and meeting point for bridge construction engineers. This symposium, but also the design, calculation and construction of large bridges, has had a lasting impact on bridge construction.

History of concrete construction

Research on the national and international history of concrete construction is currently increasing the awareness of the civil engineering community around the world for its own history.

Memberships

Manfred Curbach has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Beton- und Stahlbetonbau since 1999, head of the German delegation of the international concrete association fib since 2010 and a member of the German Research Foundation (DFG) since February 2012 . He is a member of the board and the research advisory board of the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb), where he was chairman of the executive board from 2004 to 2012. From 2002 to 2008 he was a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and from 2003 to 2008 chairman of the board of the VDI-Gesellschaft Bautechnik. Curbach has been working on the scientific advisory board of the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering BAW since 2011 and has been chairman of this advisory board since 2015. Curbach is a member of the advisory board of structure - magazine for structural planning and civil engineering as well as the editorial board of the magazine "Civil Engineering Design".

Manfred Curbach has been a corresponding member of the engineering class of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft since December 2019.

In addition, Curbach heads the German delegation of the international association fib (Fédération internationale du Béton) and heads the working groups for textile-reinforced concrete and the history of concrete construction.
