Manfred Engelschall

Manfred Engelschall (born October 23, 1921 in Hamburg ; † August 10, 2008 ) was a German judge and lawyer. He is considered a pioneer of German press law.

Career

Engelschall studied law at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg . In Freiburg he became a member of the Corps Suevia Freiburg . Engelschall was a judge in Hamburg since 1948. In 1952 he stopped working as a judge to study at the London School of Economics .

In 1967 Engelschall became the presiding judge of Chamber 24 at the Hamburg Regional Court. It was the first civil chamber with special responsibility for press law. It gained nationwide notoriety under the title Press Chamber.

In 1978 Engelschall became chairman of the 14th Senate at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court , where he dealt with traffic law, and in 1979 chairman of the complaints committee of the German press council .

After retiring in 1988, Engelschall initially worked as a consultant to Matthias Prinz's law firm in Hamburg. In 1991 he finally got on there as a senior partner, which he remained until his death. The law firm , which specializes in press and media law , was named Prinz - Neidhardt - Engelschall after joining . Engelschall died in 2008 at the age of 86.

Media presence

In his eleven years as chairman of the press chamber, Einelschall judged the complaints of numerous public figures who saw their personal rights being called into question by press reports. This included celebrities like Romy Schneider , Prince Bernhard and Princess Irene of the Netherlands . He also decided the process, which Alice Schwarzer and Inge Meysel brought against the star because of sexist title pages , which was followed with nationwide attention . Engelschall dismissed the lawsuit as there was no legal basis for conviction, but expressed regret over it.

Private life

Manfred Engelschall was the father of three children. He campaigned for social issues. He was an ambitious recreational ocean sailor who took part in ocean and transatlantic races, and chairman of the arbitration committee of the German Sailing Association .
