Adams is a place in Berkshire County in eastern Massachusetts in the United States .
geography
Adams lies in the valley of the Hoosic River , surrounded by the Taconic Range to the west and the Hoosac Range of the Berkshire Mountains to the east. Nearby is Mount Greylock , the highest mountain in Massachusetts. The place is also on the Appalachian Trail .
history
Adams became independent in 1778 under the name Adams, named after Samuel Adams . The land of the place was then divided into 0.4 km × 0.81 km large plots, on which mostly farms were located on the Hoosic River , which was used to drive the mills. Between 1810 and 1820, the population grew with the arrival of farmers from the west in search of better soil. The Village Cotton Manufacture Company was founded in 1814 , bringing the population to 4,000 between 1820 and 1835. This also favored the opening of the Hoosac Tunnel in 1875. In 1878 North Adams was separated from Adams. Before that, the name South Adams was used for the southern part of the place, but there was never a place called South Adams. President William McKinley visited the site twice, and a larger than life statue was erected in his honor in 1903. In 1958 the Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates (later Berkshire Hathaway ) shut down the factory, causing many jobs to be lost.

Nowadays the place lives from the mining of limestone for calcium carbonate production , from paper bleaching and from tourism .

Adams is on the north-south New England Interstate Route 8 . Massachusetts State Route 116 also ends here .
