Manfred Magnus
Manfred Magnus (born October 4, 1939 in Salzburg ) is a former Austrian motorcycle racer and five-time Austrian motorcycle champion.
Life
Even as a small boy, Manfred Magnus took part in soap box races on the autobahn at Walserberg and Maria Plain . At the age of 15 he received his first moped from the Salzburg company Frey, which at that time already had a Puch agency in Salzburg. This moped, a Puch moped, was Manfred's pride and, according to him, the fastest in the city of Salzburg. At the age of 16 he already took his driving test and took part in the Sollböck mountain valuation run in Lower Austria in 1956 with a KTM Tarzan. He won a gold medal. In 1957 he started to really race. at the Zeller Eisrennen he came second in the 125 cm³ skijoring class behind Paul Schwarz, Salzburg, and Erwin Lechner (all three on KTM). This was followed by a third place in the airfield race in Zeltweg , Styria in the 125 cm³ class and a second place in the 175 cm³ class.
In 1958 he started the ice race in Thiersee, North Tyrol , where he came second in the 125 cm³ class behind the Tyrolean Franz Albert; but already in the 175 cc race on the same day he defeated Albert and crossed the finish line first.
Due to his studies in Germany, Manfred Magnus was only seen on race tracks again from 1961. At the Austrian Grand Prix at the May 1st race, he became the best Austrian on his newly acquired Paton 125. He ended 1961 with his first state champion title in the 125 cm³ class, replacing long-time national champion Erwin Lechner. This was followed by state championship titles in the same class in 1963, 1964 and 1965 (no state championship title was awarded in 1962). In 1970 he won the national championship title again, but in the 350 cm³ class.
In 1963 record attempts on the Salzburg-Süd autobahn near Grödig / Anif , Manfred Magnus drove the flying kilometer on a 250 cm³ factory Honda in 16.42 seconds / 219 km / h, a record for the 125, 250 and 350 cm³ classes that still apply today.
