Manfred Reiss

Manfred Reiss (born July 1, 1936 in Großenhain ; † September 1, 2015 ) was a German sports scientist and athletics trainer .

Life

Reiss graduated from school after the eighth grade in order to begin an apprenticeship as a men's tailor, as he was supposed to take over his parents' business. As an active track and field athlete, he specialized in middle-distance running. He later made up his Abitur and became a sports teacher at a vocational school before completing a distance learning course at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) between 1955 and 1960 . After completing his studies, he first became an athletics teacher at the DHfK, and from 1963 on, he worked in Berlin as the main consultant for competitive sports in the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport . In 1964 he completed his doctoral thesis at the DHfK. The topic was "Investigations into the immediate preparation for competitions in middle-distance running: a contribution to the preparation of middle-distance runners for the 1964 Olympic Games".

From 1965 to 1969 he worked in the research center of the DHfK, from 1965 on he also trained the middle-distance runners Jürgen May , Manfred Matuschewski and Siegfried Herrmann , May ran the world record over 1000 meters in 1965 under his guidance, Matuschewski 1966 German record over the 800- Meter route.

From 1969 he worked at the Leipzig Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport (FKS) in the department of endurance sports. In 1977 his habilitation (subject: "On some problems of performance development in the men's disciplines of GDR competitive sports: a training method and conceptual contribution to overcoming the too slow development pace of men's performance in important sports in the GDR") was accepted. In 1978 he became a professor.

His research focus was on training science aspects of athletics.

After reunification, from 1992 on, Reiß worked at the newly established Institute for Applied Training Science (IAT). He left there in 2004, but remained professionally active in the training of fitness trainers and fitness economists at the Leipzig University of Cooperative Education and later at the German University for Prevention and Health Management .
