Manfred Stadlin (born September 8, 1906 in Zug ; † November 16, 1994 in Zug; entitled to live in Zug) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ), publicist and judge .

Life

Manfred Stadlin came from a liberal family. His grandfather was Silvan Stadlin , FDP Cantonal Councilor and Mayor of Zug. His father, the Chief Justice Ernst Stadlin, was also a member of the FDP.

Stadlin attended the Canton School of Zug from 1922 to 1927 and then studied law in Zurich , where he also received his doctorate in 1933 . From 1936 to 1965 he was the editor of the free-spirited Zuger Volksblatt . He was also a judge at the Zug Higher Court from 1951 to 1976 and its president from 1973 to 1976.

Political career

Stadlin started his career in politics with the young liberals. On November 25, 1934, he was elected for the FDP in the Cantonal Council, to which he belonged for two full legislative periods from 1935 to 1942. In 1942 he missed re-election and was able to move up in May 1944. On December 30, 1948 he was elected President of the Cantonal Council for the 1949–1950 term. He remained on the council until 1954 when he was not re-elected again.

In the National Council elections in 1947 he was able to win back the seat that had been lost to the SP four years earlier for the FDP . He was a member of the National Council for 20 years. He did not run for the 1967 elections ; his successor was his party colleague Andreas C. Brunner .

From 1935 to 1940 Stadlin was also secretary and 1942 to 1959 president of the FDP Zug. He was Vice President of the FDP Switzerland for ten years.

Stadlin was close to the liberal labor movement and built up the Zug section of the National Association of Free Swiss Workers (LFSA) .

Because of his political work, Stadlin is known as an "anti-statistical liberal". He was seen as an opponent of any form of dictatorship and totalitarianism , especially fascist and communist , and an “advocate of the free market economy ”, but precisely because of his commitment to the liberal wing of the labor movement, he was said to have a “pronounced sense of social responsibility”. As a publicist he is described as “sharp-tongued” and “controversial”.
