Manfred Wegner

Manfred Wegner (* 1957 in Eutin ) is a German sports scientist and university professor ; since 2008 on the position of a W3 professorship for sport psychology and movement science at the institute for sport science at the University of Kiel .

Life

Wegner attended school in his hometown of Eutin , graduating from high school in 1975 , after which he studied biology and sport at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel between 1977 and 1986 . In the meantime, he took a semester abroad at the University of Utah in the United States . In 1985 he obtained a master’s degree from the University of Utah, and in 1986 he passed the first state examination for teaching at high schools in Kiel. Wegner played handball for TSV Altenholz in the second division.

He embarked on a scientific career, worked as an assistant at Kiel University while he was writing his doctoral thesis (subject: "Concentration and concentration training in indoor handball: theory and empiricism"), which he completed in 1992 with the title " summa cum laude ".

In 1998 he submitted his habilitation on the subject of "Disabled people in sport: the psychology of stress management as reflected in individual case analyzes". Wegner then worked until 2003 as a senior assistant and substitute professor at the sports institute of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.

In 2003 he took up  a professorship for sports psychology, sports sociology and sports history at the University of Kassel , which he held until 2008. In 2008 Wegner returned to Kiel and took over a professorship for sports psychology and movement science.

The focus of Wegner's academic work includes disabled sports (he is co-editor of the book “Handbook for Disability and Sport” published in 2015), sports game research, the topics “Stress, Emotion and Coping ” as well as “Motivation and Action” and psychological counseling, aspects of team building , Family sports as well as prevention and rehabilitation sports.

Wegner shaped the development of family sports within the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and built up this area together with Ute Blessing-Kapelke after the association was founded.

In 2007 Wegner was elected to the Advisory Board of Special Olympics Germany , and in November 2017 he was elected Vice President Education and Academy of the association. At the German Disabled Sports Association, he is a member of the popular sports committee. Wegner was decisively involved in the development of the German sports badge for people with disabilities. From 2009 to 2013 Wegner was chairman of the working group for sport psychology in Germany. In May 2018 he took over the chairmanship of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Institute for Sports Science (BISp), while at the same time he was responsible for disabled sports on the body.

In top sport, Wegner worked as a sports psychologist for beach volleyball players David Klemperer and Eric Koreng , and was the patron of the "Kieler Handballrunde", a discussion group with handball clubs (including THW Kiel ), which had set itself the goal of improving the coordination of youth work .
