Manfred Gebhard Adalbert Wedigo Edler Herr and Freiherr von Plotho (born July 13, 1908 in Potsdam , Brandenburg , † October 19, 1987 at Gut Bliestorf , Schleswig-Holstein ) was a German officer. He was an officer in the staff of the 71st Infantry Division of the German Wehrmacht .

Life

family

He came from the Brandenburg landowner and noble family von Plotho and was the son of Hans Gebhard Edler Herr and Freiherr von Plotho ( House Zorien ) and Ursula Irmgard von Zelewski (House Barlomin, West Prussia ). Plotho married On June 11, 1938 in Hamburg Ingrid Freiin von Schröder (born June 24, 1916 in Hamburg), the daughter of Rudolph Freiherr von Schröder (1878-1966), owner of the banking house " Schröder Gebrüder & Co. " and landlord on Bliestorf , and his wife Julinka Stein (1881–1953). Plotho's wife Ingrid inherited half of the Bliestorf estate after the death of her father in 1966.

Career

In 1937 Plotho enlisted in the army and served in the 194th Infantry Regiment of the 71st Infantry Division. In the course of his service he became a lieutenant colonel and deputy Ia officer (deputy first general staff officer ) and, with the 71st Infantry Division, he made his way across the war theaters of World War II on the western front in Belgium and France to the eastern front via the Ukraine to Russia back. After the surrender of the 6th Army at the Battle of Stalingrad , Plotho was taken prisoner of war in 1943 and did not return to Germany until 1955.

After the war, he worked as a banker, most recently at the " Schröder, Münchmeyer, Hengst & Co. " bank, into which his father-in-law's "Schröder Gebrüder & Co." bank had merged in 1969.

Field post letters

The stories of his war experiences, which he sent to his wife in over 650 letters between 1930 and 1955, are significant. Today the letters, all of which have been preserved as originals, count as important historical documents of a contemporary witness. In return he received 450 letters from his wife, which also reflect the zeitgeist of the time. In addition to the letters, photographs and travel reports from his holdings have come down to us.
